8 Alternate Home Remedies for Mosquito Bites (Besides Repellents)
Mosquito bites may seem harmless but can cause a lot of problems. They may even cause chronic ailments. Rashes, itchiness, and irritation don’t even begin to describe the loathsome symptoms. Also, if the mosquito is carrying malaria we are done for. But even after this, there are very less precautionary measures present. Though mosquito repellents are good for most, they may still leave you prone to mosquito bites. Thus, these homemade all-natural remedies will help you to get relief from rashes after a bite. We need to have some better alternatives which are not chemical based and are anti-allergic.

Remedy 1 – Lemon-Eucalyptus Oil
Lemon and eucalyptus oil is one of the best known natural mosquito repellents. Many studies have proven that the compounds in eucalyptus oil act as effective repellents against mosquitoes. All you will need is a half part lemon juice and half part eucalyptus oil, in an oil base such as sunflower oil. This mixture can be massaged on your arms and legs, which are more prone to mosquito bites. It has been found that this mixture can provide up to three hours of about 95 per cent protection against mosquitoes.
Remedy 2 – Lavender
Lavender has always been found effective against mosquitoes because of its fragrance and its oil which aren’t in the likes of mosquitoes. Crushed lavender flowers are used for making a potion to act as a repellent. It will help to repel even the adult mosquitoes. Some of lavender’s most prominent properties are analgesic, antifungal, and antiseptic. Thus, lavender will not only help to repel the mosquitoes but also it will sooth the previous rashes or bites. You can get lavender oil from the market and apply it on your body using a cloth or you can grow some lavender flowers in your kitchen garden and apply the crushed fresh flowers on bite prone areas of the body.
Remedy 3 – Cinnamon Oil
Although we know cinnamon as a kitchen favourite spice, little do people know that it is also helpful in the fight against mosquitoes. In a Taiwanese study, it was found that the Cinnamon is useful for killing off mosquito eggs. It acts as a repellent even against the adult mosquitoes. The solution must be made in a diluted concentration such that you mix 1/4 teaspoon (or 24 drops) of the cinnamon oil for every 120 ml of water. Apply or spray this solution on your clothes and the bite prone areas and you are good to go. Though, be cautious as not to apply a concentrated dose of oil on your skin.
Remedy 4 – Thyme Oil
The malaria mosquito can also be repelled by another great home remedy, that is Thyme oil. It is among the best solutions for providing protection against these mosquitoes. Studies have found that thyme oil can provide up to 91 per cent protection for more than an hour. If you are camping outside, along with the application of thyme oil, you can also throw some of its leaves into the campfire, so as to repel the mosquito by the smell. You can make a lotion by mixing 4 drops of thyme oil to every teaspoon of olive or jojoba oil or make a spray by mixing 5 drops of thyme oil with 60 ml of water.
Remedy 5 – Basil
The Tulsi or Basil is an Indian household favourite to fight off the disease-causing mosquito. It is among the best and most effective home repellents. There have been studies and experiments to prove its worthiness. The basil leaf has been observed to provide 40 per cent protection and the basil oil provides 100 per cent protection against the malaria mosquito and that too up to 6 hours after application! It has also been found that it also provides 100 per cent protection against yellow fever mosquitoes. Remember, the oil must not be applied directly on the skin to avoid irritation.
Remedy 6 – Catnip Oil
Nepeta cataria or the Catnip is a mint family descendent, which is highly effective to ward off disease-causing mosquitoes. The catnip essential oil can be used to make a home all-natural mosquito repellent. It has been found most effective to repel the yellow fever mosquitoes. This essential oil is effective in the outdoors for two to three hours. You can purchase and plant the catnip plant in your kitchen garden or buy the catnip oil. Catnip has been found more effective than many chemical-based repellents.
Remedy 7 – Soybean oil
Soybean oil is yet another household favourite for fighting against mosquitoes. If you look for studies to hold testimonies towards the effectiveness of soybean oil, you will find not one but many that show how well it acts against mosquitoes. Soybean oil, moreover, can be used along with other repellents such as lemongrass oil to increase the effect. This mixture of the oils can be applied by a cloth or sprayed on the clothes and on hands and ankles. Soybean and lemongrass oil is effective against many different species of disease-causing mosquitoes.
Remedy 8 – Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil, or melaleuca oil, is popular essential oil which can be used as an alternative for the chemically produced mosquito repellents. The most promising qualities of tea tree oil are being antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic that makes it so helpful. The rashes caused by mosquito bites and also prevention of future cases of bites decreases by the use of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil must not be applied to the skin directly as it may cause a burning sensation. Thus, use this oil with a base oil or lotion.
