Leg Cramps is a typical lower body muscle problem in human beings which can occur by overuse of a muscle or dehydration and other things such as muscle strain etc. Leg cramps mainly affect the calf muscle. The calf muscles are located in the back portion of the lower leg in the human body and as far as the human anatomy is concerned the two largest muscles within the Posterior compartment of the leg are together known as calf muscle. As we know that Leg Cramps mainly affect the calf muscle but the question is, is calf muscle the only muscle which suffers? Well, the answer is No, Leg cramps not just affect calf muscle but also the Thigh muscles as well as Feet.

Leg Cramps involve immediate painful involuntary contractions of a leg muscle. The Leg cramps do not have a fixed duration, it can be gone in a few seconds or can take more than a couple of minutes. The average duration of Leg cramps is 9-10 minutes, besides the minutes of painful contractions they can leave an impact on muscles for a whole day. Leg cramps can occur while a person is sleeping or resting, when someone suddenly awake at night they may feel Leg cramps.  Moreover, Leg cramps can also occur if there is overuse of muscles in our Lower body (basically calf muscle) or if someone is exercising for a long period it can lead to cramps.

If a person is suffering from inadequate blood supply or nerve compression he/she should consult a doctor however for most cases the Home remedies are the best way to cure Leg cramps.

Remedy I: Pickle Juice

Pickle juice is believed to be a sudden reliever from the cramps, one of the causes of cramps is the low salt level. The pickle contains a good content of Sodium in it which is an essential Electrolyte and a basic mineral that Salt contains. You can make Pickle juice at home, just follow this steps-:  

1. Take 2 cups of water and 1 cup of white vinegar.

2. Take 2 teaspoons of kosher salt and 1 teaspoon of pickling salt.

3. You can use a clove of garlic and a little sugar for taste.

4. Mix all the ingredients in a pan and set it on low flame and keep stirring it constantly.

5. Let cool, store it and keep it in the refrigerator, take 1-4 ounces per day.

Remedy II: Alcohol (rubbing)

It is believed that rubbing alcohol on the area that is suffering from cramps can help to relieve the pain. The alcohol is known to have Anti-inflammatory properties which help reducing inflammation and cramps. All you have to do is to rub a little alcohol on the spot that has cramps, and it will help to relieve the tension in your muscles.

Remedy III: Salt

Licking salt is the best method to cure a cramp as it is easily available in our homes. Salt contains Sodium in it and as we know Sodium is a basic Electrolyte and it helps to relieve pain which we get from cramps. All you have to do is take a Little salt in your palm and just lick it, it will instantly remove the pain.

Remedy IV: Mustard


The very idea of Mustard to relieve the cramp pain is just because of the belief that muscle cramps are electrically induced. There is a deficiency of acetylcholine whenever we suffer a cramp, mustard is rich in acetylcholine and therefore it helps in curing cramps instantly. Just eat a tablespoon of mustard and it will help.

Remedy V: Icing or Heating

Icing or Heating the sore area may help in relieving the pain and cure the Leg cramps. In case of icing the period of time should not be very long as sometimes it can worsen the pain but using ice in a sore area for a limited time may help. Heating the sore area relaxes the muscles and increase the blood flow which helps in relieving pain.

Remedy VI: Magnesium

Adding Little more magnesium can help to cure the Leg cramps. Magnesium is one of the essential minerals which helps to keep muscles relaxed. You can easily get magnesium from foods like dried fruits, whole grains, avocados, nuts, etc. You can also buy a supplement which contains magnesium.

Remedy VII: Walking

Whenever you suffer from a sudden cramp just try stretching your leg which may help to loosen up those cramps and may help to relieve the pain, walking slowly can also be beneficial when having a sudden cramp it can relieve those tensed muscles which are causing cramps.

Epsom salt which is also known as Magnesium sulfate is an inorganic salt is a pure mineral compound having beauty and health benefits. The Epsom salt contains magnesium which drips into your skin as you marinate in the bath and helps you lose the tension in your muscles, which in turns relieves the pain and helps you relax.

Remedy IX: Sugar


Sugar can help to relieve the pain and can cure cramps immediately. Sugar is rich in Glucose which is required for contracting and relaxing the muscles. Dissolve a teaspoon of sugar under your tongue and it will cure the cramp.

Remedy X: Baking Soda and Water

Using Baking Soda for curing cramps is believed to be a French remedy. Cramps occur when our muscles are tired resulting in the release of Lactic acid which dissolves in your blood and makes it more acidic. Adding a teaspoon of Baking soda with one liter of water may help to relieve pain as it is an antacid buffer and removes the increased acidity.


Leg Cramps mostly affect the calf muscle basically they last for a few seconds or sometimes more than a couple of minutes. Cramps occur more in old age and during pregnancy, Leg cramps are not believed to be harmful. Even they are not harmful, they can affect your performance in day to day activity mostly physical activities. There are certain things which you can do to prevent Leg cramps. Keep your diet full of sodium, potassium, magnesium and other essential nutrients. Staying hydrated also helps to prevent cramps. Don’t over-exercise in order to prevent muscle cramps.
