Laryngitis is an inflammation which occurs in your voice box. Laryngitis basically occurs due to overuse of voice box or by irritation or infection going in it.  Laryngitis affects the larynx, the larynx is an organ in your upper neck just behind the back of your throat. Common flu or bronchitis can also result in laryngitis but in most cases, an infection or overuse of voice box results in laryngitis. When laryngitis occurs the folds inside your vocal cord becomes inflamed therefore resulting in strange sound when you speak. There can be two cases for laryngitis, short-period laryngitis or long-period laryngitis. In most cases, it is a short period laryngitis where you suffer temporary infection and inflammation but sometimes it can stay for a long span of time.

In most of the cases, laryngitis doesn’t last more than two weeks and it is usually caused by minor infection or inflammation. You should always be familiar with its symptoms, some common symptoms of laryngitis consist of the following:

  1. Weak voice
  2. Sore throat
  3. Dry throat
  4. Rawness in throat
  5. Heavy and dry cough.

Laryngitis is not a very big problem and is not considered a lethal disease. You can get rid of laryngitis by self-caring but in some cases consulting a doctor is a better option. Cases, where laryngitis hasn’t cured in more than three weeks, are advised to consult a doctor. In other cases, there are plenty of home remedies which can help to prevent and cure laryngitis, some of them are given below.

I. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider has many medicinal qualities which help to prevent and to cure diseases such as anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. You can add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water and add a teaspoon of honey. Drinking this mixture twice daily will help in the reduction of inflammation and pain.

II. Ginger root

Ginger root has been used for the medicinal purpose from thousands of years. It has many medicinal properties and health benefits such as anti-bacterial and reduction of irritation. Ginger root can help in curing laryngitis because of its medicinal properties. You can use ginger by adding it to your diet or can add it to your juices. You can also drink ginger tea in order to cure laryngitis.

III. Gargle warm salt water

Saltwater can help to reduce swelling and soreness. Gargling with salt water to reduce throat infections has been used for many years. Gargling with salt water for 4-5 times a day will definitely help you to reduce irritation and inflammation. Just stir a ¼ teaspoon of salt in a small glass of warm water and just take a sip and gargle until the water becomes cool.

IV. Add honey to your tea

Honey contains many medicinal properties such as anti-bacterial, reduction of cholesterol, antioxidants etc. It is believed that honey reduces mucus production and treats infections strongly. Take one teaspoon of natural honey and add it to your cup of tea, drink it twice a day to get the desired result.

V. Let your throat rest

Laryngitis results in swelling and inflammation of your vocal cords which probably needs rest and time to heal. Talking too much and shouting can make swelling and inflammation increase. It is advised to rest your voice and talk as less as you can. Just try to avoid talking too much and shouting.

VI. Essential oils

Plants such as eucalyptus tree contain natural chemicals which can help in the reduction of mucus and can reduce irritation. Just add five or six drops of essential oil to a humidifier or just put some drops on your pillow.

Garlic is known to contain antibacterial properties it is used to treat many diseases from a very early time and it is believed to be very good food. Anti-bacterial properties of garlic are much helpful when dealing with infections. You can use garlic by adding it your diet or just putting it in salad etc.

VIII. Drink Fluids

Drinking a lot of fluids can help you stay hydrated and can help in the reduction of throat infection as it flushes out mucus and phlegm. Drink a lot of water when you are suffering through laryngitis, the water will help to clear your throat and will help in fast recovery. Drinking tea with added ginger or honey can also help in the reduction of inflammation and irritation just make sure not to take fluids containing caffeine as it makes your body less hydrated.

IX. Avoid alcohol and smoking

Drinking alcohol can make your body dehydrated and will make the situation bad whereas smoking any types of cigarettes can irritate your throat which can cause coughing and reduce the time of curing. It is advised to avoid smoking and drinking when suffering from laryngitis.

X. Vinegar

Vinegar is one of the most used remedies when it comes to curing and preventing common diseases. Vinegar contains medicinal properties which can help to prevent and to cure infections. Gargling with diluted vinegar can help your throat to cure infections and inflammation. Just mix two tablespoons of white vinegar into a glass of water and the gargle.
