Has it ever occurred to you when you sometimes go out for swimming and after an hour or two you feel a weird pain in your ear? If yes then you are suffering from an infection “Swimmers ear”. Swimmer’s ear can be described as infection which usually occurs in the outer ear canal, the outer ear canal runs from your eardrum to the outside of your head. Swimmers ear is brought by water that remains in our ear after swimming or sometimes bathing. The water which remains in your ear can create a moist environment which helps in bacterial growth, finally leading to the infection. Infection can cause swelling in your ear canal, discharge and sometimes a ringing sound in the ear which is known as tinnitus.
Swimming is not a very tricky exercise but one can get confused that how swimming can cause an infection, basically the people who often been diving or swimming a lot get the swimmer’s ear. Diving is one of the basic cause of swimmer’s ear. There can be lots of signs indicating swimmer’s ear, basic signs involve severe pain in ear followed by itching and sometimes the outer ear might get swollen. Discharge is a true sign of swimmer’s ear, a greenish-yellow discharge of pus from the opening of ear indicates the infection. However, swimmers ear can usually be cured within seven to ten days and if treated with care the pain will be vanished within few days.
When in pain it is usually advised to go to the doctor, and why not it helps to relieve the pain. But it’s better to prevent the infection than to cure. Furthermore, there are many home remedies which can help to prevent swimmer’s ear and some of them are listed in this article.
I. Swim carefully.
Diving very hard and too much can result in swimmer’s ear. Swimming wisely can prevent the infection, just watch for the days which alerts for high bacterial count. Don’t swim on those days when the chances of bacteria count are high.
II. Dry ears
After swimming or bathing your ears usually gets wet and the wetness can create moisture for a long duration. The moisture content can cause infection leading to pain and other problems. It is good to dry your ears with a towel, wiping slowly your ear with it can absorb the wetness which will prevent moisture. There are other ways of drying your ear, standing in sun is one and another one is drying it with blow dryer which should be set at the lowest range.
III. Homemade drops
Sometimes it is difficult to realize that a person is suffering from a punctured eardrum, some signs of a punctured eardrum are release of pus from the opening of ear canal and severe pain. To cure the pain you can easily make a homemade of eardrops, you can use those eardrops before and after swimming. Make a mixture of one teaspoon of white vinegar and one teaspoon of rubbing alcohol, put the mixture in an eardrop container. Apply the ear drops (3-4) in both ears before and after swimming, this will prevent your ear from the growth of bacteria and fungi that can swimmer’s ear.
IV. Use ear buds
It is always smart to use earbuds when scratching your ear or removing the earwax out of it. Removing earwax out with match sticks or hairpins or any foreign object can pack earwax deeper into your ear canal which can cause irritation in the skin inside the ear canal. Sometimes using pointy objects can also cause injury while plucking out earwax, which can lead to swimmer’s ear.
V. Onion juice
Infection caused by the swimmer’s ear can be very painful while the release of pus makes it more unhygienic. Since 1800 people are using onion juice to treat ear infection and ear pain. Onion juice is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, although it is not 100% sure that it will work in every case. The anti-inflammatory properties of onion juice basically help to relieve the pain and keep the bacteria away from growing.
VI. Garlic oil
It is believed and known that garlic has antifungal and anti-bacterial properties. Garlic is in use from very long in treating athlete’s foot and colds. Garlic oil can also treat swimmer’s ear as it contains anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, you just have to put few drops of garlic oil in your ear and left it for 2-3 minutes without disturbing it. Using this method twice a day and it will help you curing swimmer’s ear.
People often use heating as a source to relieve pain and discomfort, heating your ear with a hair dryer can also help in relieving the pain and evaporate any water which is left in your ears. All you need to do is set your hair dryer on low and blow warm air into your ear. If you cannot use a dryer then use a hot water bottle and wrap it around a towel and hold it against your ear for 15-20 minutes.
Apple cider vinegar is used as a home remedy for many problems. The vinegar is acidic in nature which helps to kill the bacteria’s and help in curing swimmer’s ear. Treating your ear with apple cider vinegar is very simple, placing a few drops of apple cider vinegar in your ear and letting it sit for 10-15 minutes will help curing the problem. Repeat the process twice a day.

Coconut oil contains antimicrobial and antifungal properties in it. It can be used to treat swimmer’s ear. Just place 4-5 drops of coconut oil in a cotton swap and dap it on the outer part of the ear canal, just make sure that while dabbing the swab doesn’t go deep enough touching the eardrum. Using this method will surely help to cure the swimmer’s ear, it can take a little time but with time the problem will be healed.
