Pneumonia is a very serious disease which no one wants to be ever infected with but sadly it has become a very come plague and is known to be more serious for infants, children and people over the age of 65. But what is pneumonia? It is an infection that causes inflammation in the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs get inflamed with fluid and pus (purulent material). This fluid causes uneasiness which may result in difficulty in breathing, cough with phlegm or pus, irregular fever, and chills. The main causes of pneumonia are microorganisms, like bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Though the symptoms of pneumonia may not be very serious looking the disease itself can be life-threatening. It can have a difference in the seriousness from mild to life-threatening. It will cause more problems for people with health problems such as respiratory issues or a weakened immune system.



There are many common symptoms of pneumonia, such as:

  • Persistent and painful coughing
  • Coughing up mucus with small amounts of blood
  • Trouble breathing normally and shortness of breath
  • Chest pains, especially when moving around and breathing more heavily
  • Developing a fever
  • shaking or sweating
  • Fatigue and sometimes muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Sometimes rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing

Remedy 1: Garlic


Garlic is a great home remedy when fighting off pneumonia. The chemical compounds present in garlic are capable of treating diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi. It helps to treat the symptoms of pneumonia. As it brings down the fever and chills caused by pneumonia. It also helps to clear the phlegm and mucus from the chest and lungs. You can consume it by mixing 1 cup of milk with 4 cups of water, in this add a ½ teaspoon of crushed garlic to it. Bring this solution to boil and concentrate it. Drink this garlic-water solution at least 3 times a day.

Remedy 2: Peppermint

Peppermint has many great properties such as antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. It is very helpful in fighting many varieties of health conditions. The respiratory problems caused by pneumonia can be eased by the Menthol present in peppermint. You can consume peppermint by preparing a peppermint tea. You can also add a little honey in the tea. The tea must be consumed twice a day regularly. It will also help in reducing the production of mucus.

Remedy 3: Fenugreek Seeds


Fenugreek seeds have mucolytic properties. This means that it helps to break up congestion. If you are experiencing fevers from pneumonia, the fenugreek will help to induce sweating in the body and bring down the fever. It will also help the mucous release from the lungs. To consume the fenugreek seed, you can prepare the fenugreek tea by adding 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds 2 cups of boiling hot water. Let it set and then strain the tea. Try to drink 4 cups of fenugreek tea daily. Regularly decrease the amount of tea you are drinking when the pneumonia symptoms decrease.

Remedy 4: Eucalyptus Oil

Another good home remedy to treat and heal the symptoms of pneumonia is Eucalyptus oil. The properties of this oil help in reducing the mucus present in the respiratory tract and thus relieve the cough and cold. The inflammation and pain caused by the infection can also be healed by using this remedy. You need to apply 2 to 3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the chest and back of your body.

Remedy 5: Turmeric


The medicinal properties of Turmeric are well renowned and it is also a great home remedy to fight the symptoms of pneumonia. Just like fenugreek, turmeric or the curcumin in it has mucolytic properties to eliminate the mucus formed inside the lungs in the body. All the antiviral, antimicrobial and antibacterial properties of it help to treat pneumonia. Drink milk with turmeric in it twice a day. You can also mix the turmeric powder in oil and make a paste to rub on the chest.

Remedy 6: Holy Basil and Black Pepper

A very well known home remedy is the Holy basil or tulsi. It is an Ayurvedic, Indian origin herb with antimicrobial properties. Also, Black pepper (piperine) when used along with tulsi will help to enhance its effects and medicinal benefits. Black pepper helps to clear the cough and cold and Tulsi will help to improve the internal health and immune system and fight off pneumonia. They can be consumed as a portion of the two in water or as tea.

Remedy 7: Turpentine Oil


The turpentine oil is an effective home remedy that helps relieve pain and congestion which is a common symptom of pneumonia. You can buy turpentine oil very easily in the market. All you need to do is to apply a small amount of turpentine oil around the rib cage. Oil can also be applied by mixing it will some amount of camphor in it. It will increase the effectiveness of the oil. After you have massaged, cover the area with a warm wool cloth.

Remedy 8: Oil of Oregano

The pneumonia-causing germs can be killed by the use of oregano oil. The Oil of oregano (Origanum) has many antiviral, antifungal and also antibacterial properties. It will thin out the layer of mucus in the lungs and will help clear out the congestion. You can buy the essential oil of oregano in the market. Add 2 or 3 drops of oregano oil into a glass of water or fresh juice and drink it at least thrice daily. You can also add the drops of the essential oil in the diffuser or put it on a tissue beside your pillow.


Pneumonia is an ailment which can be life-threatening. If anyone experiences the aforementioned symptoms they must consult a doctor as soon as possible and follow the prescription. It will help you to recover from the disease. According to a report the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are more than 920,000 deaths in infants and children caused because of pneumonia every year. The pneumonia is more prone towards children and people over the age of 65 and those who are already weak from health issues. You can use the recommended home remedies to help fight the symptoms which come with pneumonia. Also, these remedies will help to increase the overall immunity of the person. The amount of each remedy must be taken as prescribed.
