Fever or ‘Jwara’ in Ayurveda is described to be the first symptom and most common medical sign present in every disease (and is the most powerful, strong and chief among all the known diseases). Most fever confronted in public practice is often viral, person limiting and usually require only indicative treatment. And this raised temperature is the prime cause of causing unhappiness in sensory and motor organs as well as in the mind. It is described as both a disease as well as a symptom of a disease in Charaka Samhita as ‘nidanarthkara roga‘ and can occur at any time throughout the life, i.e. from pediatric to geriatric age group or from birth till the death. The benefit of high body temperature is that they harm the invading microorganisms and raises the antibody production, thus reinforces the defense mechanism, but it should be remembered that high fever also raises catabolism, increases heart rate and can cause irreversible damage of brain and death.

Before classifying a fever as viral, one must compulsory look for pallor, jaundice, neck stiffness, liver & spleen and examine the chest. If there is a known widespread occurrence of infectious disease in the locality or town, then that cause must be thought of first. (like typhoid, malaria, hepatitis, influenza). One should always try to find the cause of the fever by assessing the related symptoms, as such the attending physician/practitioner must be aware of the common causes of fever, their symptoms and warning signals which suggest that this may not be a simple fever. Simple viral fevers do not require antibiotics.

If the fever does not reduce within 3-4 days of conventional treatment, consult a Physician to evaluate the associated symptoms and investigate fully. Even after taking a good history, meticulous physical examination and initial investigation, the fever still remain,  we can categorize it under PUO [pyrexia of unknown origin] or ‘Sannipatika Jwara‘. 8 Effective Home Remedies Treatment for Hypertension | Ayurvedic Treatment

Ayurveda considers Hypertension as an ancient disease probably beginning with the earliest known civilizations. ‘Acharya Charaka’ (father of Ayurvedic Medicine) has described this condition as ‘Raktagata Vata‘ (problem in blood circulation) which deserves respect and approval, and has called this condition where the vayu (air) gets aggravated inside the rakta (blood) resulting in distress free pain in the whole body, and if not managed properly leads to one pathological stage to another, i.e. from initial Raktagata Vata to raktavrita Vata (blockage) to raktashonita Vata (complications), resulting in initiation of disease process in the mind and body, as a result it is rightly classified as one of an example of Psychosomatic.

PS:- In present scenario, hypertension is largely asymptomatic and is often diagnosed on routine examination with complaint of early morning headache (localized to occipital region), followed by dizziness, fatigue, palpitations, thus it also goes by the name ‘silent killer‘ since it can go undetected for years.

Although there are no accurate/ pinpoint rules or cut off line, but nevertheless it is defined as a condition if on various discrete occasions the systolic blood pressure is above 140 mmHg or the diastolic pressure is above 90 mmHg, thus the patient is considered to have “elevated blood pressure” and one should label it as hypertension only if the reading remains on the higher side after taking blood pressure recordings on different time of the day  (1-2 weeks) in relation to height/weight/waist-hip ratio and physical examination, investigations does go in the favor of hypertension, i.e. presence or absence of target organ damage, any other cardiovascular risk factors and/or contributing factors.

While in majority of the population [95%] the cause of their high blood pressure is not known and is called as ‘essential or primary hypertension’ and although it can’t be permanently cured, but the elevated blood pressure in such individuals can be reduced by certain dietary measures and lifestyle modifications such as reduction of salt, reduction of weight, increase in physical activity, while in 5% of the remaining a definite cause of high blood pressure exists [most often associated with the endocrine system] and is called as ‘secondary hypertension‘ where treatment is directed to remove the associated condition or underlying cause  of hypertension with non pharmacological measures along with Pharmacological treatment.

The foremost plan of therapy of high blood pressure should be functional and practical control of blood pressure to check, alter the course of complication(s) and thus minimize the comprehensive threat of an individual without disturbing the constitution of life, i.e. drug therapy should bring about a desired result in lowering the elevated blood pressure within normal range, while controlling other adjustable risk factors. Also, cautious reduction of blood pressure to the optimum level over an interval of 2-6  months should be an advisable therapeutic intent since one should be aware , that dangers of hypertension mainly include target organ damage [TOD] such as: left ventricular hypertrophy [LVH], retinopathy, nephropathy, cerebrovascular accidents [CVAs], renal failure [CKDs]: all life threatening and insuperable problems, and for this treatment plan to work  one must encourage hypertensive patients to have regular medical examinations and to follow with the prescribed drug therapy, along with necessary methods to reduce associated risk factors for cardiac diseases, also in order to help prevent and diagnose hypertension one must encourage people to have regular blood pressure checkups, by teaching individuals what their blood pressure reading is and what the numbers mean, and also by encouraging diet and lifestyle changes which may delay or prevent hypertension. Or on best interest, one can make a sponge cushion for your chair. Piles and constipation has a vicious cycle: i.e. when piles develop one is afraid of passing stool with fear of pain ayogand bleeding  resulting in constipation and because of constipation next time he has to strain hard to pass stool resulting in piles and cycle continues, and if at the same time patient is suffering from an abdominal problem with constipation and diarrhea as main symptom [like IBS], this further aggravates the problem, thus as told earlier in Ayurveda we hold that Arsha (piles) – atisaar (diarrhea) – grahani (IBS) are interrelated with each other and if one soften other starts to recede itself. Make sure to exclude any endocrine cause of low metabolisms like thyroid, blood sugar or any other hormonal problem, or medications (use of steroids, anti-depressants). Make a habit not to strain while passing stool, and use Indian seat instead of western, avoid cold tap/jet water instead use warm water to clean your anus after each motion. 1. Avoid spicy or fatty foods: As mentioned earlier spicy and fatty food can upset your stomach and hence can cause nausea too. So they are needed to be avoided.
  2. Add protein to your meals: Protein-rich food such as boiled chicken and eggs are always better than fatty and carbohydrate-rich food. They can also cure nausea too.
  3. Avoid large meals: Nausea can also be avoided by splitting your meals into smaller parts. You can take six small meals in a day rather than three large meals. This enables better digestion and thus help in avoiding nausea too.
  4. Stay upright after you eat: You have probably heard it a thousand times. You should not lie down immediately after consuming a meal, this makes digestion slow and thus cause nausea. All you need to stay upright till 30 minutes from your meal.
  5. Avoid drinking with meals: You should not consume liquids with your meals, as they make your food wet and it gets bloated in the stomach and thus results in nausea.

  9. Exercise: If you keep your body in motion by yoga or workout, your food will be digested efficiently and thus nausea will be avoided.

Dietary Regime:

Here is the list of food items you should avoid or take at the time of nausea.

Things to avoid: Fatty and spicy food must be avoided and overeating any type of food can cause nausea. So overeating must be avoided. Furthermore, you should avoid cereal, crackers, toast, and gelatin.

Things to take: Ginger, Lemon, Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Baked potatoes, Flat mineral water, Vegetable broth, and Sports drinks. Eat healthy food daily.

Nausea can easily be treated by using the above mentioned home remedies. However, if you are facing it frequently we always recommend consulting your doctor. Nausea accompanied by chest pain, an intense headache, jaw pain, sweating, or pain in your left arm is a symptom of a heart attack. In that case, you should consult your doctor immediately before it gets worse. Furthermore, if nausea is combined with headache, stiff neck, and difficulty in breathing then it could be a sign that you have consumed something poisonous or something you are allergic to. This is surely a case of emergency.

However, if nausea doesn’t occur frequently or isn’t accompanied by the aforementioned symptoms then you can use any above-mentioned home remedy to treat nausea. You can avoid nausea before it catches you by avoiding heat and humidity, sea voyages and strong odors.

10 Effective Home Remedies for Healing Bronchial Asthma| Ayurvedic Treatment

In Ayurveda, Asthma is known as ‘Swasa rog‘. Any improper or non-uniform irregularity which if occur in the quality, occurrence, and pattern of normal respiration can be termed as Swasa. And it is mainly caused by the Vata and Kapha doshas. Swasa is broadly classified into five types, which is Chinna Swasa (Chyne- stroke respiration), Maha Swasa (Dyspnoea major), Urdhawa Swasa ( Expiratory Dyspnoea), Kshudra Swasa ( Dyspnoea minor), and Tamaka Swasa (Bronchial Asthma).

Out of these 5, Tamaka Swasa, provides a similar picture with Bronchial Asthma and thus management (as well as curative and therapeutic therapy) will be advised according to Tamaka Shwasa. (Tama have different meanings and can either be described as: to choke, or be at unrest, or oppression of chest). Many respiratory diseases have been classified in Ayurveda as Pranavaha Srotas Vyadhi under the term ‘Swasa’

There are several types of Respiratory diseases, which in the present scenario have become important to diagnose. And sometimes need an important medical as well as surgical emergency owing to the combined predisposition of genetic and environmental factors. Although it can range from simple common cold to life-threatening pneumonia, embolism, cancer but one disease which deserve special mention is Bronchial Asthma which can occur during any stage of human development, i.e. from pediatric to geriatric age group and disease prevalence is more in urban areas than rural areas. It is more prevalent in developed countries (city having non-agricultural jobs) than developing countries owing to the higher incidence of air pollution and environmental factors.

The problem with the pathophysiology of this disease is that although symptoms are steady but airway inflammation continues to occur over a prolonged period. The airways of such person are hyper-responsive or hyperreactive to wide nonspecific stimuli such as exercise, cough, cold, dust, pollens, allergy, stress, occupation.

  • Living in polluted environment
  • Residing in cold places.
  • Intake of dry food and excess exercise.
  • Psychological factors.
  • Food/ Drugs and medications.
  • Family History.

While the last cause is inducing factor all other are provoking factors to an individual’s asthma.

Bronchial Asthma Symptoms
  1. Due to obstruction in the respiratory system [Pranavaha Srotas] the person finds it difficult to exhale [i.e. the person breathes in air but cannot get it out]
  2. Due to ongoing inflammation, there is continuous need to expel the mucus plugs and sputum from the respiratory tract, failure to expectorate results in more breathlessness and patient feels if he/she is surrounded by darkness and distress.
  3. The person is unable to lie properly, due to obstruction of ‘prana vayu’ and prefers to sit in a hunched forward position in order to get more air.
  4. It is only when the sputum is expelled, he/she feels better momentarily due to easy flow of prana vayu [respiration], moreover, he/she prefer to raise the face upwards to facilitate easy entry of prana vayu.
  5. If the attack goes on increasing it causes the person to use his accessory muscle of respiration causing sweating on forehead, increased respiratory rate along with heart rate causes a feeling of giddiness/ light headedness in the patient.
  6. The condition gets aggravated by presence of clouds, rainy season, cold and Kapha vardhak diet.
  7. The patient has natural tendency for hot beverages/climate since it gives relief to the patient.

There might be prolonged remissions in patients with Asthma i.e. in between attacks there may be no signs, no symptoms, and no positive laboratory tests. Exercise-induced Asthma [EIA] is particularly troublesome in children. In the acute phase, one should primarily focus on how to relieve the difficulty in breathing, when under control one should try to eradicate the disease with a proper therapeutic approach.

If despite taking inhaled steroids and bronchodilators, asthma attacks are recurring, one can ask for use of mast cell stabilizer drugs [on prescription]. As Asthma is a Psychosomatic [मनोदैहिक विकार] disease thus calmness of mind is essential, as such Medhya Drugs [nootropic herbs] are useful part of treatment. Deep breathing exercises help increase the lung capacity and also create awareness of the lungs and breathing process. Doing Yoga Excercise daily as well is an advantage. Advice holiday in a dry climate [if there are repeated attacks] or one can think of shifting his/her residence.

In Ayurveda, the condition of Indigestion is termed as agnimanda/ mandagni (अग्निमंद/मंदाग्नि) and is said to be caused due to low or weak digestive fire or Agni (in Hindi language it is responsible for good digestion and health of an individual), which if left untreated can result in the formation of AMA’ (undigested food which has not undergone proper digestion causing various other digestive problems, like gastric, acidity, stomach pain, etc.)

Also, it is rightly said in classic texts: ‘Sarve Roga Mandagni(सर्वे रोगा: मंदाग्नि) i.e. whenever there is weak digestion due to any cause it results in formation of AMA which if not treated in given time results in its circulation to different parts of human body thereby causing disease(s) and sometimes even death.

As this is one of the commonest symptoms and most prevalent complaint among the general population thus a simile is given for Indigestion: just like too much of ‘ghee’ if poured on fire results in it being getting extinguished likewise a person indulged in taking/eating too many ‘SNIGDHA’ (which is either oily, sticky, slimy, mucilaginous) diet results in Mandagni and thereafter indigestion. It should be noted that indigestion is not a disease but a symptom of an underlying pathology/condition, thus if it fails to resolve by itself despite with lifestyle/dietary changes it is best to see your Doctor.

As said earlier, sometimes indigestion could be secondary to some other underlying condition like digestive disorder [acid peptic disease, inflammation of the stomach, constipation], so if indigestion as a symptom is persisting for more than two weeks. One should seek an opinion of Medicine Specialist and/or Gastroenterologist for further examination, investigation and evaluation. As Indigestion is a Psychosomatic ‘मनोदैहिक विकार’ disease thus calmness of mind is essential (Medhya – nootropic herbs are useful).

As the age progresses older people do have lower vitamin B12 level and tend to produce less acid [HCl] called as hypochlorhydria resulting in impaired/slower digestion. So it is best to have a dietary regime which does not cause stomach upset, mainly lactose-free diet and maintaining a diet with a low glycemic index. If symptoms persist despite following the dietary regime/lifestyle modifications and remedies, have an appointment with your doctor since it can be symptoms of underlying illness or infection which require medical intervention. And finally, do some physical or Yoga exercise.

10 Easy and Effective Home Remedy For Sunburn

Sunburn is a very common skin problem that people living in hot places face during summer. But how actually it occurs? During summer when sun rays are the strongest, sunburn is more likely to happen. Sunburn happens in some degrees that determine its severeness. It can be mild or moderate and can also be very severe too. Sunburn is also known as Erythema which is basically burning of skin due to its overexposure with UV (Ultraviolet) radiations coming from the sun (which is also known as acute cutaneous inflammatory response).

A mild sunburn demands less management and isn’t that painful as compared to the severe one, which requires a lot of management. In the case of mild sunburn, the affected area gets red and after 7-8 days the skin of this area starts to peel off. In the case of severe skin burn, the symptoms are called Sun poisoning and they include immediate skin inflation, skin blisters, dehydration, and electrolysis imbalance.

However, the mild skin burn is most the common one and it can be cured easily using home remedies and as far as concern goes for severe sunburn, you should contact a doctor instead of treating it yourself. Furthermore, there are a few things you can follow to avoid sunburn completely. This includes using SPF 30+ cream, keeping yourself hydrated through the day and most obvious staying out from the sun.

Sunburn Symptoms and Causes

Here it’s important to understand that overexposure to Sun ultraviolet radiation can easily harm our living tissue of the skin. A common symptom in humans includes reddish skin with pain, general fatigue or mild dizziness. During high temperature, Sunburn can simply occur (sensitive skin) in less than 15 minutes. And the pain usually occurs 6 to 48 hours after exposure. The burn persists to develop for one to two days (seldom followed by peeling skin in 3 to 8 days and sometimes, shedding and itching may continue for several weeks).

Commonly, people with lighter skin tone (and limited capability to develop a tan after UV radiation exposure) have a greater risk of sunburn. The Fitzpatrick’s Skin phototypes classification describes the normal variations of skin responses to UV radiation. Persons with type I skin have the greatest capacity to sunburn and type VI has the least capacity to burn. Children younger than six and adults older than sixty are more responsive to sunlight. However, all skin types can develop sunburn.

An overindulgence of Ultraviolet radiation can be life-threatening in severe cases. UV radiation can lead to non-malignant skin tumors. Even there is an increased risk of three types of skin cancer: Melanoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Basal-cell Carcinoma.

Sunburn is a provocative retort in the skin triggered by direct DNA damage by UV radiation. When skin cells DNA are overly damaged by UV radiation, type I cell-death is triggered and the skin is changed without any notice. The cause of sunburn is the direct injury that a UVB photon can induce in DNA (left). As it is a reaction of the body to direct DNA damage from UVB light. Sunburn can even cause an inflammation process, including the production of prostanoids and bradykinin. These elements can increase sensitivity to heat by reducing the threshold of heat receptor. Two most common Sun defending measures are applying sunscreen and using sun protective clothing. But still, if you catch the sunburn you can check the following 10 home remedies to cure it.

14 Effective Home Remedies for Headache | Ayurvedic Treatment

Headache-Home Remedies

In Ayurveda, Headache occurs due to the Dosha Imbalance: Pitta (fire/water), Vata (space/air) which is almost a universal symptom and one of the most common human complaint and the reason for consulting a Physician. It is rightly said that the differential diagnosis of a headache is probably one of the longest in all of medicine. Since it can range from a mild head injury to serious brain tumor or could be limited to itself like a migraine. Although most headaches in general practice are ordinary tension headaches. But the character of pain may vary as such the final outcome will, therefore, depend upon the correct diagnosis.

In Ayurveda, “ARDHAVABHEDAKA” is one of the shoola pradhana shiroroga [pain predominant headache] mentioned in the classics and symptoms of Ardhavabhedaka very much correlates to that of Migraine, which is a common throbbing unilateral headache due to multiple factors including diet, environment. Thus present article covers headache with special reference to Migraine.

Signs to Check While Headache

The brain contains no pain receptors [i.e. it is anesthetic], but the surrounding structures like meninges, periosteum and the scalp all have pain receptors. As such most headaches are not harmful [unless proved otherwise], even said that one should always check the following signs [ as routine] in every patient of a headache even if they seem to be of less importance or clinically insignificant to the patient. These are:

  • Check and measure blood pressure: and control if hypertension is there.
  • Look for any extracranial pathology like tenderness over paranasal sinuses, acute or chronic infection in teeth, ears, tonsils or involvement of temporomandibular [TMJ] joint.
  • Check for any painful neck movements for cervical spondylitis. [if the headache is associated with fever and stiff neck exclude meningitis ]
  • Check for eyesight in the young patient(s) since they usually have a refractive error, and/or for glaucoma if eye is painful/ red.
  • If the patient is known diabetic, check his/her blood sugar level to exclude hypoglycemia which can give recurrent and chronic headache.
  • If on examination there are associated neurological sign [weakness of limb, convulsions] then refer for Neurologist’s opinion and relevant investigation like X-ray skull, CT scan.

To summarise this whole article that includes home remedies for headaches, we have a few points to mention that you need to note. Headaches due to hunger, sleep deprivation or hangover are physiological [unless proved otherwise]. A headache is a complaint where symptoms are more significant than the signs and investigations [if any] is an exception, not the rule. Eye problems and sinus disease seldom cause headaches. Patients tend to blame their headaches on eye strain or sinusitis, but in fact, these are rare etiologies. To bring relief from headache/migraine one can take medicine either in oral [as tea/tincture/syrup/pills] or as topical remedies [as creams, oils, bath, poultice]. Headaches can be primary under clinical examination and investigations where the patient continues to suffer from the complaint like migraine/a tension-cluster headache and secondary due to some underlying cause like a brain tumor, inflammation of meninges or hemorrhage. Thus you should diagnose a headache as Primary only after excluding any secondary cause of a headache. Orgasm is a rare cause of a headache [coital cephalagia]. Chronic daily headache can be secondary to depression.

Headaches that begin after the age of fifty should always be investigated to rule out organic causes. A tension headache is the commonest headache, it is more towards evening and the patient feels better on pressing over the scalp. If you can eat during your headache, it is probably not a migraine. In Modern medicine, ergotamines still remain the best treatment for migraine headaches. The last tip according to Ayurveda is to daily do neck exercise or Yoga for Headache.

10 Effective Home Remedies for Diabetes (Ayurvedic Treatment)

In Ayurveda, diabetes is referred to as madhumey or madhumeha, which is known to mankind since ages and is a global health problem of clinical medicine and alarming the world as a non-infectious pandemic. Incidence of diabetes mellitus is increasing day by day because not only it has a family background. But at the same time with the advent of automobiles and machines, the physical labor is drastically reduced (especially with the availability of protein-rich diet along with changing lifestyle and increased stress in the society). Type 2 diabetes forms 95% of total diabetes. India alone has more than 35 million diabetes, with many of them being unaware of their condition.

With the discovery of the relation between the pancreas and diabetes mellitus, and with the invention of insulin, it was hoped that the battle of diabetes was solved. But only after few decades it was realized that the problem of this disease had many facets and it is of multifactorial origin, so there had been a keen desire to find out oral hypoglycemic agents which can replace insulin therapy.

In this pursuit, it has always been felt to explore the Ayurvedic resources which provide a promising field of drug research, especially in view of the least side effects of these drugs. Etiological factors of diabetes mellitus are now fairly known and it is almost decided that it is the resultant of the interaction of multiple etiological factors, HENCE THE MULTIFACTORIAL APPROACH will be appropriate.

Acharya “CHARAKA” has also emphasized that as one etiological factor may produce different disorder or may be specific for producing one disease only similarly multiple etiological factors may be involved in the causation of one disease:

एको हेतुरनेकस्य तथेकस्यैक एव हि I

व्याधेरेक्स्य चानेको बहूनां बहवोsपिII [ च० नि० 8/24 ]

Thus one pacificatory measure is useful in many disorders, as well as in single disorder, likewise, many measures are required for a single disorder as well as multiple ones:

एका शान्तिरनेकस्य त्थेवेकस्य लक्ष्यते I

व्याधेरेक्स्य चानेका बहूना बहवय एव च II [ च० नि० 8/30 ]

Thus an indigenous drug may not be useful in lowering the blood sugar to the same extent as the insulin and other agents. But we may have some other influences which may be useful for the management of the disease. Keeping in view the poor acceptability of insulin and the troublesome untoward effects and reduced efficacy after the prolonged use of oral hypoglycemic agents [OHAs]. The need for potent and safe oral hypoglycemic drug(s) is always felt. Hence in the following article, an attempt has been made to publish some ayurvedic home remedies and herbs possessing anti-diabetes properties.

EVALUATION: Charaka Samhita has detailed description of diabetes under the disease “PRAMEHA” which deals with etiology, clinical features, classical types, pathology, prognosis, complications, and principles of treatment and management of diabetes [MADHUMEHA] by various streams. Acharya Charaka has described “PRAMEHA” as ‘Anushangi’ which means ‘Punarbhavi’ i.e. the disease is very difficult to cure.

The most common factors are hereditary and dietetic which are responsible for causing the disease, thus PRAMEHA can be classified accordingly as:

  1. SAHAJA OR KULAJA PRAMEHI [hereditary]: this can be interpretated as inherited disease due to certain defects in the sperm/ovum before fertilization. The person having Sahaja Prameha is asthenic, may develop this disease without overeating or without consuming excess of fats and without lack of exercise. It can be compared with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
  2. APATHYA NIMITTAJA PRAMEHI [acquired]: this is due to lack of exercise and faulty lifestyle, such persons are obese and habitual of sedentary life and sleep. It can be compared with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

By avoiding the food and behavior which precipitates the disease, and by providing the foods and exercise which antagonize the pathology and the disease, no drug is required: “संक्षेप्त: क्रियायोगो: निदान परिवर्जनम I “ [ सु० सू० 1/25 ]
  2. Chikitsa: which means DIET & LIFESTYLE REGIME: (below are the instructions on what to take and what to avoid)
